| . 9 Effective Tricks to Remove Different Types of Stains from Clothing Wearing pristine clothes gives anybody a sense of pride, boost in confidence and appearance. A stain, be it a light smudge or a heavy one is certainly a sore-eye on a clean outfit. There are can several inadvertent situations where a slip or a spill can cause ugly stains on the clothes. Do not fret and fume over stains anymore. Get the worst stains out for good with these simple stain removal tips.
1. Blood
Everybody bleeds and in case of accidents, it is inevitable that the clothes will get stained with blood. Thumb Rule - Never let a blood stain to set in/dry.
a) Apply vinegar on the stain directly and let it sit for few minutes. Once the stain loosens, you can launder as usual. Another way is to mix one part of baking soda with two parts of water. Blot on the stain area, which will remove the stain. Blot again with a damp cloth to remove the baking soda or directly toss it in the washing machine for normal laundry.
b) You can also make a semi-thick paste of cornstarch and apply on the location. Keep it away for drying. Repeat the process until the stain is completely gone. These techniques work well on carpets and table linens too.
2. Rust
Rust can be one of the most annoying stains and can be notoriously stubborn. As with any stain, remember to attend to this stain as soon as you notice it.
a) Spread the cloth and sprinkle salt on the rust location. Rub lemon juice on the stain. Dry the cloth in the sun for about 30 to 60 minutes to remove the stain. Launder as usual. You can also use vinegar in place of lemon juice to remove the stain.
b) Rhubarb Stalks (Revandcheeni in Hindi) are quite effective in removing rust stains. Let the stalks boil in water for 20 minutes. Remove the stalks and place the garment in the boiled water to remove the stains. Wash the garment as usual.
3. Coffee or Tea
If you are a coffee or tea drinker, there are chances of having a coffee or tea spill on the clothes or even table linen. Never rub the stain as it may spread it further.
a) Use a soft cloth or napkin to remove the stain and make a thick paste of laundry detergent, water and distilled white vinegar. Apply the paste on both sides of the stain. Rub the stain in a circular motion on the stain with a toothbrush. Rinse the garment with cold water. Follow by applying laundry detergent directly on the stain and rub with your fingers. Launder as usual.
b) You can also pre-soak the stain in a solution of distilled vinegar, laundry detergent and water for about 30 minutes before washing the cloth.
4. Food Grease
Food spills are so inevitable in a daily routine. Here is a simple trick to remove the food stains.
a) Apply a few drops of dish wash liquid on the surface and let it sit for few minutes. Launder it as usual to see the stain disappear like a charm! This also works on old food stains.
b) You can also rub baby talcum powder on the stain and let it sit for few hours. Discard the powder and wash as usual.
5. Ink Blotch
Ink stains are horrendous if you do not act on time. Washing the cloth repeatedly can be a waste of time.
a) A simple trick is to soak the stained clothing overnight in a mix of milk and vinegar. Dry the garment and then wash the garment. The enzymes in milk and vinegar breaks down the ink like magic.
b) Make a paste of milk and cornstarch and apply on the location. Allow the paste to dry, brush off the residue and launder the garment.
6. Mud
Kids, dirt and mud are inseparable. Though these stains are tough, they can be easily removed.
a) Unlike other stains, you should let the mud stain dry. This will prevent the smearing of stains further. Brush to remove dirt and soil. Make a solution of warm water, few drops liquid dish soap, and a table spoon of white vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes and later rinse with water.
b) If the stain persists, use rubbing alcohol (not drinking alcohol) on the stain and rinse with clear water.
7. Grime around the Collar and Cuffs
Even the cleanest person sweats. Along with skin oils, it can produce dirty grime.
Dab warm water on the collar/cuffs and smear few drops of dish wash detergent or shampoo on the area. Rub the area, lather, rinse and wash.
b) You can also soak the cloth in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar with warm water to remove the stain.
8. Nail Polish
Yes, it is common for nail polish bottles to make that nasty spill spoiling your beautiful clothes, be it a garment or bedspread.
a) Take a cotton ball and moisten with nail polish remover (non-acetone). Check if the fabric is color fast by trying the remover on a hidden area. Blot the stain with the remover. You will see that the nail polish transfers to the cotton ball. Make use of fresh ones to prevent further staining.
Launder as usual, once the stain is removed.
9. Wax
Best way to remove wax stains is to let the wax dry and remove them with a sharp object. Lay the garment on sheets of white paper towels and place few more sheets on the garment. Iron the surface with low heat and steam setting should be off. Move the iron over the paper towels. The paper towel will absorb the wax as it melts.
Ensure to keep changing as many towels as required to prevent further stain transfer. Launder the garment as usual. | |
